Frayed rope ends, tool handles, garden implements or even old steering wheels can be sealed in plastic by simply dipping them in a can or spraying!

A new product called Plasti Dip can be used to cover just about any surface with a synthetic rubber coating that protects and insulates. And because it remains flexible and stretchy, it won’t become brittle or crack.

Plasti Dip is the invention of an American company, and was originally developed to apply plastic coatings to replace worn grips on hand tools, such as pliers, wrenches and cutters.

But in recent years, customers in the US have applied Plasti Dip to a wide range of uses, including crutch handles, garden tools and implements, metal grates, sealing rope ends to prevent fraying, glass edges, pulleys, rings and poles, and fabrics (helps prevent fraying and weatherproofs).

“The number of uses it has been put to is endless,” according to Bruce Walker, of Griffiths Equipment, distributor of Plasti Dip in New Zealand.

“It’s a unique product and because it can stick to most hard surfaces, including metal, wood, glass, masonry and other plastics, it is extremely versatile. The Americans refer to it as ‘like duct tape in a can’ because of the hundreds of uses.”

Plasti Dip comes in a can, like paint, and objects can either be dipped in the solution or it can be applied with a brush. There is also a spray can version.

Provided they are dry and free of rot/rust, surfaces coated with Plasti Dip will resist moisture, weathering, corrosion, abrasion and some acids. It is claimed to be UV stable for between seven and 10 years, and can withstand significant temperature extremes.

Once it is dried, Plasti Dip is very durable and will not slip, pucker or peel off the surface to which it has been applied.

Plasti Dip comes in four main colours — red, blue, yellow and black — which means items such as electrical wires can be colour coded for safety. It also allows for colour matching or contrasting with existing product colours.

The new Plasti Dip range is now available from leading hardware outlets and automotive accessory retailers throughout New Zealand.

Plasti Dip can be used to cover anything from frayed rope ends and electrical wiring to tool handles in a sealed rubberised plastic coating.
