Phil Round of Avenue Construction Ltd was delighted when he found out his Palmerston North home was named the Manawatu Wanganui & East Coast Registered Master Builders 2016 Supreme Renovation of the Year, as well as being awarded a Gold Award and Category Win for the Master Build Services Renovation Award up to $250,000 category.

Mr Round says it was a great feeling to win the award, which is the company’s third regional Supreme win after winning the award in 2009 and 2010.

“Winning the Supreme award for a third time shows we are consistent in the work we do. It’s incredibly rewarding to be recognised by your peers,” he says.

Mr Round explains that the blending of the old and the new was a key feature of the renovation, but access to the property and the weather proved challenging at times.

“It was an older home, so it was important that we matched all the existing materials, including weatherboards and skirtings,” he says.

“As we were working at the back of the property, a scaffold was built so we didn’t have to walk through the house. We also had to deal with weather issues for the top storey addition.”

Judges praised the renovation for its outstanding and carefully crafted response to meet the clients’ requirements.

“A combined ensuite and bathroom has been designed to be easily accessed from the master bedroom and the hallway, servicing all the upstairs bedrooms.

“The master bedroom has been enlarged, incorporating new wardrobes,” they said.

“Roof alterations accommodate the renovation, and all work has been done in a manner that reflects the character of the existing home, all of which clearly challenged the limitations of the budget.”

Mr Round adds that winning the award illustrates the company’s high quality of work, and shows they are prepared to be judged by their peers.

“We have been entering the House of the Year competition since it began in 1991. It’s a fantastic way to showcase and gain recognition for your work,” he says.

Mr Round praises the Registered Master Builders Association for the support they provide to members, and the camaraderie amongst members.

Avenue Construction Ltd is looking forward to the national competition next month, where they hope to win their first national award.

The Awards are made possible through the support of PlaceMakers, Master Build Services, GIB, Nulook, Future-Proof Building, Carters, Plumbing World, Resene and Bunnings Trade.
